Grammys 2010
I'm not a music person. Never have been, probably never will be. For example, I tell most people that "The Who" is probably my second favorite band ever after "Queen." I don't know if I can name five songs "The Who" did. I just know that whenever whatever classic rock station I'm listening to says "that was____ by The Who" I think, "well I really liked that song." I intend to predict The Who's set list for the Super Bowl in a few days, but that's just a head up. Regardless, I always watch the Grammys from beginning to end for two reasons: (1) I'm just the kind of guy who happens to be into these awards shows, and (2) I get to catch up on all the popular songs I missed out one.
Despite this musical deficiency, every year this day comes along and I see a commercial and realize "oh shit, the Grammys are tonight." Commence the looking the up of the nominees and bigger songs that I may have missed out on. Last year at the Grammys Katy Perry performed "I Kissed a Girl." It was the first time I heard it. "That's catchy," I thought. "It's old," I was told the next day in class. That further shows my disconnect from the musical world.
One of my issues with the Grammys is that they're so forgettable. This is partly because most of us never listen to full albums anymore. Sure we can name a few songs from the biggest artists of the year, but most of us can't name the album they came off of. Also, there are so many fucking categories split up into so many different genre's that it's hard to care who wins a Grammy award outside of the big 4 awards where this is no genre categorization.
This year the Grammy's seem to have a very "pop" vibe. Every album nominated is from the most popular people in the business right now. This is a far cry from last year's winners Allison Krauss and Robert Plante, or Herbie Hancock the year before. Since I only care about those 4 big awards, I'm going to tell you right now who I'm cheering for so you can cheer along too:
Best New Artist: The Ting Tings because I said so.
Song of the Year: Pretty Wings by Hod David & Musze because I don't think the others are particularly well written.
Record of the Year: Halo by Beyonce because I think it's the best song in this group. Taylor Swift's You Belong to Me better not win because I think that's a pretty bad song.
Album of the Year: Fame by Lady Gaga because she's the best.
To prove my point, here's the full nomination list. Start at the top and start scrolling down. Eventually you'll lose complete interest and you won't even be halfway through. So let's get excited to see Gaga do whatever she's going to do, and spend the rest of the show bored to death.

I was also expecting that Lady Gaga will win Record of the Year, but im also glad Taylor won the award.
