The Difference Between Television and Serious Television

When you watch as much television as I do, shows inevitably end up in some sort of hierarchy.  There are the shows you absolutely can't miss no matter what that you find yourself watching every second intently.  On the other end of the spectrum is the stuff I watch with the volume turned down low while I do work and only pay attention when it looks like something good is happening.  Here's a pictorial representation of how my room physically changes from television to serious television.

Here is the usual set up for the television and my room:

Futon remains where it is.  If this is the set up in the room, I'm most likely either not watching TV at all, or I just have it on while I'm doing some work.  Most common examples include afternoon television and sporting events in which I have little to no stake in.

When things get a little more serious, the futon moves to a position where I will lie down while watching television:

This set up happens most often during late night TV after I've finished any work for the day, or for other television shows that I like but may not feel a need to watch every second of.  If the room has this set up, I have totally changed gears from work mode to relaxation mode.  Needless to say, this set up gets the least amount of action.

Finally comes the set up where serious television occurs, assist to the camera timer on the picture:

The futon does not move from the previous set up, but it rotates so that, rather than being in a lying position, I am in a sitting position facing the TV.  This is me (in pajamas) watching Barack give some talk or something tonight.  I'm deep in thought as soon by my hand ever so slightly rubbing my chin (this indicates thought).  From here, the big shows get a lot of action, most importantly, LOST, which starts up on Tuesday.  This position also works well for AIM conversations occurring while a television show is on.  Mostly these are only with Craig since hardly anyone uses AIM anymore, and of the people that still do, Craig is the only one I talk to on a regular basis.  So Craig, this is what I look like if you're IMing me while I'm watching TV.  On weekends, replace that Poland Springs water bottle with a brandy or a martini.

So I hope you enjoyed that inside look into the life of TH.  Is this an odd habit?  Perhaps.  I don't really know.  I've never discussed TV watching habits with anyone.
