Day After Christmas Mailbag
Why is Christmas so forgettable? I don't mean that personally I have no memories of past Christmases, but it's a day that gets built up for a month or more only to be thrown away as soon as 12:01 AM on December 26th hits. The local oldies radio station (103.3) plays exclusively Christmas music this time of year on an annual basis. This year, they actually started before Thanksgiving. No oldies, only Christmas music for more than a month leading up to Christmas. As soon as Christmas is over and it becomes December 26th, the Christmas music turns off and they have a "Top 500" countdown of the best oldies of all-time.
I'm not a fan of this practice. I'll be in the same holiday mood probably through the new year. This year, since the Bowl-Mania party is taking place on January 2nd, it's safe to say that I'll be in the same holiday mood at least through then. All I'm saying is that Christmas should get a fair "winding down." Don't just abruptly pull the plug on it. Let it linger for a week or so. Stupid Oldies 103.3.
Anyways, let's do some Mailbagging:
What the fuck is with these Levi's commercials? Have you seen em?
I haven't. I watch more TV than most people I know but I somehow I am able to completely tune out commercials. Unless it's something really annoying, I won't remember it. I can't really explain this. I'd say 75% of the time when someone asks "have you seen the commercial where..." I just feign knowledge. I haven't seen the commercial. But if I say no then I might not get to hear whatever that person intends to say. Keep this in mind for the future.
I'm going to see Avatar today. Mainly cause I was invited and there's nothing else to do with everyone else I know participating in Christmas Eve related activities. My question is- what are your thoughts on Avatar? I'm not sure I understand the hype surrounding it as it doesn't look particularly different or better than other CGI dominant movies. I heard it was filmed differently (something about two cameras at a time) but I haven't confirmed that. Just wondering if you could offer up any information on it/any opinions on it. Thanks.
- Craig
Well there just aren't many movies that have ever been in development longer than Avatar. Cameron wrote it back in the early 90's before he worked on Titanic, with the intention to do Avatar right after Titanic. Then he decided that the technology wasn't good enough, so he spent years making the proper technology himself. Combine that with what most people consider the best CGI ever, along with a budget that some rumors have put in the $500 million range, and you have a movie that's going to get a lot of people buzzing. Also, it helps when a movie is predicted to "change film-making forever" two years before it's even released.
As for how good it is, I can't opine yet since I haven't seen it. Most reviews are positive though, which is good.
I also wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas, as this mailbag falls on a Friday. Hope you get some sweet gifts.
- Craig

I'm not sure that you would know without the internet. A calendar could certainly be incorrect. Someone could lie to you about the date and/or it's significance. The internet is never wrong. It's the safest bet. I'm only sad that I came across it on Christmas night. I got a few hours of "yes," but now I won't get that again for a whole year. Very sad.

Christmas vacation has slowed my blogging. That will change this week. I promise you so.

Hey Craig,
I don't know if you read the comments section, but I think I can help you out with two of your questions. First, I saw Avatar and, like yourself, I was admittedly a skeptic going into it. However, I thought it was very good. Now, I know this is useless to you because you've already seen it, but I thought you might like some insight. I know as a fellow human you may be somewhat insecure about your beliefs and you may be reassured if your opinion matched up with mine (or you may be reassured that I am stupid, thus promoting your own self confidence. Either way, this is prob good for you).
Second, I've seen those Levis commercials. Are they good? Are they bad? I don't know. But they certainly are strange. Whatever they are, Levis got us talking about their product. And the funny thing about it: I bought 2 pairs of fucking levis jeans a month ago! Was it because of the commercial? I don't know. The commercial gives me a weird "American History X" vibe, but at the same time it attempts to capture a whole American liberty thing. I don't know if it works, but the fact that I know that Levis wants to be associated with freedom may appeal to me. I don't know, it's a weird commercial.
